Bangalore Development Authority or BDA instigated operations on 6th January 1976 under the BDA Act 1976. BDA amalgamated the developmental duties of Bangalore City Planning Authority and City Improvement Trust Board (CITB). The BDA undertakes various housing projects, plans development of the infrastructure facilities for Bangalore city, recognizes newer sites available for developmental projects. The main objective of BDA Bangalore is to attain a continuous, well-planned and sustained growth of the city.

Since its incorporation, Bangalore Development Authority BDA has alloted 76,000 sites to individuals and various builders for construction of mass residential properties in Bangalore . Along with these over 800 sites have been alloted to various public utility boards in Bangalore for development of adequate civic amenities. Timely recognition of new sites for constructions and announcing their auctions and subsequent allotments is enacted in continuum through various BDA projects.

The dedicated departments of Bangalore Development Authority undertaking individual developmental works include:

Engineering Department BDA: It is associated with designing the basic layouts of Banashankari extension project, Shri M. Visveswaraiahnagar, Arkavathi Nagar, Ananda Rao Circle Flyover and Bangalore city Ring Road.

BDA Town Planning Department: This department undertakes planning of mammoth tasks like green belts in the city, land prices, water supply, transport infrastructure, population and social index, urban fabrics etc.

Land Acquisition Department: This department is responsible to acquire the required land for construction of any project planned in that area from the concerned owner or occupant in Bangalore.

Finance Department: The financing arrangements and managing the available financial resources and division for various projects undertaken is the task handled by this department.

Law Department: They look after the legal formalities of any sale, purchase or auction of the land under the jurisdiction of BDA Bangalore and also the legal formalities related to the projects undertaken.

General Allotment Department of BDA: The allotment of the various sites auctioned by narrowing down to the most deserving public utility board depending on the location and size of the site is done by this department.

Public Relations: Being the central development authority for a fast developing Tier I city like Bangalore, BDA has to maintain a dedicated Public Relations wing to attend to any PR subject.

Environment and Horticulture: Development and maintenance of regional and district parks, lakes construction and desilting of existing ones, horticulture grounds etc.

Through effective functioning of all these departments in perfect mutual synchronization has helped BDA in developing a dream city housing top most IT giants and Corporate houses along with world-class residential complexes.
