List of Banks in India
The first bank that opened up in India was during the late 18th century. It was known as General Bank of India. Soon after the launching of GBI, the country faced up with launching of another bank known by the name Bank of Hindustan. But, both these banks are now obsolete and extinct. The Reserve Bank of India (founded 1st April, 1035) is the central banking system of India. It is this financial institution through which the entire monetary control of the country takes place.
This is the bank which maintains the account of the country, not the people. For the people’s account the banks that are present are mentioned below. The country currency is approved through the RBI and then is only declared valid.
During the early 19th century, the State Bank of India got established. This is probably the oldest reigning bank available in India till date. The establishment year of SBI is 1806. It is the biggest financial cum banking company available in India that is owned through state. The associate banks that fall under the SBI are SB of Hyderabad, SB of Mysore, SB of Bikaner & Jaipur, SB of Travancore, & SB of Patiala. The SBI has its headquarters in Mumbai and has its offices in over 32 countries globally. The total number of ATM centers SBI has including the associate banking services is 45,000! Offices of SBI (including associates) are an astonishing 99345!
The Allahabad Bank is the next oldest bank, which is still functioning today. It got established in the year of 1865. This is the bank which has been tagged as the “OLDEST JOINT STOCK BANK AVAIALBLE IN INDIA”. The bank has its headquarters in Kolkata, and said to consist of 2402 branches all over the country. Overseas branch is only available at Hong Kong and Shenzhen.
After that, the Punjab National Bank (better known as PNB) got its establishment. The year was 1894. This bank is said to be the 2nd largest bank available in India. The headquarters are situated at New Delhi. The bank has around 5000 branches situated throughout the world (764 cities).
After PNB, it is the launching of Bank of India that took place during the year of 1906. This is one of the commercial bank that is owned by the state. It has its headquarters in Mumbai. This bank has a total of 3415 branches among which 29 branches are situated outside India. The products available through this banking organization are commercial banking, retail banking, private banking, and managements of asset, mortgages, and several schemes on credit cards.
In the same year, two more banks got opened up. They are the Canara Bank & the Corporation Bank.
The Canara Bank is one of the oldest government-banking organizations available in the country. The headquarters are situated at Bengaluru. It has a total of 3057 branches located throughout India. It also has overseas offices in places like Hong Kong, Shanghai, London, Dubai, Doha & Moscow.
The Corporation Bank has its headquarters situated in the city of Mangalore. This is a bank which deals with services related to credit cards, loans, investment on vehicles, savings account, etc. The bank has around 3,500 branches throughout the country.
The Indian Bank was established in the year of 1907. This bank has its headquarters located at Chennai, and is considered as one of the most important commercial banks of the country. The number of branches it has within the country is 1657. It has even branches situated at foreign countries like Singapore, & Sri Lanka.
The following year, in 1908, the Bank of Baroda got established. This is the third largest bank available in India. Around 3,000 branches are situated throughout India, and nearly 78 branches are situated abroad.
In the same year, the Punjab & Sind Bank got established. This bank has its headquarters situated at New Delhi. The bank has around 900 branches all over the country, among which 400 branches are situated within the state of Punjab.
On the December of 1911, the Central Bank of India was established. This government bank has its headquarters situated in Mumbai, and is one of the largest commercial banks available within the country. The total number of branches that this bank has all over the country is 3563. The bank also has around two hundred & seventy extension counters present within the 27 states of the country.
The Union Bank of India was established in the year of 1919. The bank has its headquarters situated in Mumbai. Considered to be one of the largest public sector banks of India, it has its offices in foreign locales like china, UAE, Abu Dhabi and Hong Kong also.
Other Government owned public sector banks are as follows (according to the year of establishment): Andhra Bank (1923), Syndicate Bank (1925), Bank of Maharashtra (1935), Indian Overseas Bank (1937), Dena Bank (1938), Oriental Bank of Commerce (1943), UCO Bank (1943), United Bank of India (1950), & IDBI Bank (1964).
