DJB or Delhi Jal Board was formed on 6th April ‘1998 by the incorporation of Delhi Water Supply and Sewage Disposal Undertaking programs under the Act by the Delhi Legislative Assembly. The two major divisions of the work portfolio of DJB Delhi are Water Supply and Sewage Disposal.

Sources of Water:

The prime water sources for the water supply in Delhi by the DJB are River Yamuna, Bhakra Storage Plant, Upper Ganga Canal and also the Ground Water resources of the city.

Water Supply in Delhi:

  • The Delhi Jal Board water supply includes:
  • Tubewells
  • Ranney Wells
  • Under Ground Reservoirs (UGR)
  • Booster Pumping Stations (BPS)

Delhi Jal Board Water Treatments Plants:

The DJB has set-up several water treatment plants in the city to provide filtered water supply to the entire city. The number is water treatment plants in Delhi is constantly increasing with the DJB adding to it diligently. The upcoming DJB Water treatment plants include the ones at Nangloi, Bawana, Sonia Vihar, Trans-Yamuna, Murad Nagar and many more. To further add on to it 13 more UGR and BPS are being established by the DJB Delhi.

Water Conservation Programs by Delhi Jal Board:

The DJB launched awareness programs concerning water conservations at the individual level with extensive media coverage. Rainwater Harvesting is also practiced in all DJB buildings. Various RWAs (Residents’ Welfare Associations) are also being involved under the Bhagidari Schemes for mass rainwater harvesting to create a supplementary water supply source to support the depleting water tables.

Water Supply Quality Assurance Measures Adopted by DJB Delhi:

Delhi Jal Board assures that the water supplied confirms to the quality standards laid down by the Ministry of Urban Development, GoI. The raw water is treated at the Delhi Jal Board water treatment plants and then supplied through various channels. Samples of water reaching the consumer’s end are collected on a regular basis in different parts of Delhi to provide Safe Drinking Water to the consumers.

Waste Water Handling:

Delhi Jal Board has an extensive network of internal, peripheral and trunk sewers covering over 5600 Kms. DJB is also setting up 17 Sewage Treatment Plants (STP). Sewer lines have been laid down by Delhi Jal Board in all approved colonies in Delhi, 414 out of over 567 unauthorized colonies, resettlement colonies and 93 urban villages.
