Navi Mumbai, a suburb of Mumbai, is located on the west coast of the Indian state of Maharashtra. One of the largest planned cities of the world, the city of Navi Mumbai spreads over an area of 344 square kilometers. Within its land area, it encompasses parts of Thane and Rajgad, two of neighboring districts of Maharashtra. Located between Sahyadri mountain ranges and South Konkan coast line, the city has a mainland, which lies mostly on the eastern seaboard of Thane Creek. The city is stretched lengthwise with Thane situated towards its northern boundary and Uran to its southern boundary. It is connected to the capital city of Mumbai through the Vashi and the Airoli bridges. Vashi and Nerul are the two most developed areas. Out of the total population of 21 lakh in Navi Mumbai, about 6 lakh live in Vashi and another 4 lakh in Nerul. The remainder of the population reside in areas like Belapur, Koparkhairne and Kharghar. Administratively, the city is largely controlled by Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), which has an area of 163 sq. km under its jurisdiction. Navi Mumbai came into existence in 1972 as a twin city of Mumbai and soon it became the most preferred destinations for industrial development and real estate growth.
