It was the 29th day of March, 1977 when Amritsar was declared as a city under the PMC (Punjab Municipal Corporation) Act 1976. The Municipal Corporation of Amritsar was established in place of the Municipal Committee. This Municipal Committee was established way back in 1868. The 1st election for Municipal Corporation of Amritsar was held in the year of 1991 and post election, Amritsar was divided into fifty wards. Sri. O.P. Soni was elected as the Mayor. Sri. Raminder Singh Bularia & Sri. Subash Sharma were elected as Sr. Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor respectively. On the 18th day of June, 1996, the elected corporation was finally dissolved.
After the second election, the number of wards increased from fifty to sixty. New mayor elected was Sri. Subash Sharma. The new Sr. Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor elected were Sri. Lakha Singh and Kumari Raj Sharma respectively. However, Sri. Subash Sharma resigned before the end of term and as a result, Sri. Brij Mohan Kapur was elected as the new mayor on the 18th of Oct, 2000.
After the third election, the number of wards increased from sixty to sixty-five. New mayor elected was Sri. Sunil Dutti. The new Sr. Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor elected were Sri. Sawinder Singh and Om Parkash respectively.
The present house election was held on 2007. New mayor elected was Sri. Shwait Malik. The new Sr. Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor elected were Sri. Ajaybir Pal Singh Randhawa and Kashmir Singh respectively.
To give more privilege to women, thirty three percent seats have been reserved for women electoral candidates. In fact, seats are also reserved for backward and scheduled casts.
Presently, there are two types of projects going on under Municipal Corporation of Amritsar: Sewerage project (in collaboration with JECA) & JNNURM Projects (quite a big list).
