KMDA was formed under a Presidential Ordinance in 1970. It is responsible for planning, promoting and developing Kolkata Metropolitan Area. It develops new areas and townships. Apart from this it provides facilities like water, drainage and waste management. KMDA is also the Technical Secretariat to Kolkata Metropolitan Planning Committee (KMPC).
Real Estate and Area Development Projects by KMDA
KMDA is a housing development authority and undertakes housing development through out Kolkata. It provides houses to different strata of classes according to their need and budget. In last five years it has completed 10 housing projects worth Rs 140.61 crore and work on 8 projects is in progress. Some of the housing projects undertaken by KMDA are:

- VAMBAY (Valmiki Ambedkar Awas Yojana)
- Purba Housing
- Baishnabghata-Patuli Township Area
- GL Block Housing Complex

From past thirty years Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority has been successfully planning and developing the urban infrastructure within Kolkata Metropolitan Area. The infrastructure projects undertaken by KMDA cover the areas like water supply, sewerage, sanitation, traffic, transportation etc.
