Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority was set on 26 th January 1975 with a view to plan and carry out development activities in Mumbai. MMRDA was set up under the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority Act, 1974 Government of Maharashtra.
The development strategies of MMRDA expand to sectors like housing, water supply, transport, ecological balance and the likes. As an apex body for the development of Mumbai in all sectors, it has the sole authority over the formulation of policies and preparation of plans for a key project. New growth centers are developed through these key projects under the careful monitoring of the authority. Sometimes, MMRDA itself implement the project taking into account its particular significance.
MMRDA Objectives
Their main aim is to achieve a balanced development in Mumbai. For this they follow certain strategies such as preparation of upcoming projects, endorsement of alternative growth centers, strengthening of infrastructure finance and provision of development finance. In order to put these strategies into practice MMRDA prepares plans, devise certain policies and directs investment in the region.
MMRDA Projects
It was started in 1997 and completed in 1984. Under this project five fly-overs bus depots wers construted. Apart from this 700 buses were provide and new bus shelters and Hi-Tech traffic signals were installed.
Mumbai Urban Development Project (MUDP)
Under this project 35,000 slum households in Greater Mumbai was provided with better amenities and provision of water supply and storm water drainage were also undertaken.
