The city is well looked after by the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) which was formed in the year 1950. During its inception, it only covered an area of 52.49 Sq.Km which increased to 190.84 Sq.Km. in 1991. Along with its urban agglomeration, the extension is about 259.63 Sq.Km. One of the most densely populated cities in India, the population in the Municipal Corporation of Ahmedabad was 3.51 million in the year 2001 with the average density of population being 18420persons/Sq. Thereโ€™re various responsibilities for the councilors like water supply, maintenance of sewerage, preservation of roads, illuminating the streets, providing primary education, cheap, quality and round the clock medical and fire services, comfortable public transport, beautification of the city by creating parks and gardens. The current mayor is Mr. Asit Vora.

There are various projects undertaken by the AMC to glorify the city and help the common people. One of the most famous of them is the Sabarmati Riverfront Development Project. Itโ€™s looked after by the Sabarmati River Front Development Corporation Limited (SRFDCL) which was formed in May 1997 with the duty “to revivify the city centre by reconnecting it to the river”. With an initial budget of Rs 1crore, it was meant to develop about 10.4 Kms on both sides of the river. Though it faced a number of problems like water level, floods and the most vital one of rehabilitation of dislodged slum dwellers, it has finally gained pace.

The SRFDCL employed Environment Planning Collaborative (EPC) to prepare the blueprint of the project. In the first part of the project it chose to work in an area of 400 acres from Subhash Bridge to Vasna Barrage. Later on the project got a huge revamp and was meant to beautify a stretch of land measuring 20 Km from Narmada main canal to Vasna barrage. The main intention behind the project is improve the environmental condition of the area and develop the living state of the slum dwellers who face a lot of accommodation problems due to various reasons. The project is being financed on its own by selling a part of the proclaimed land. Rs 1200 crore will be spent for a number of different and important works like the enlargement of roads along the river, boulevards, construction of 4000 houses under slum rehabilitation, amusement and aquatic parks and building of Kotarpur Weir.
