Raipur is a city located on the eastern bank of Mahanadi River. It is the capital of Chhattisgarh state, India. The southern side of the city is filled with dense forest while Chota Nagpur plateau lies on the northern side. The River Mahanadi flows through the east and Deccan plateau have its surroundings on the southern side of this city. Earlier, Raipur used to be a part of Madhya Pradesh. After formation of new state Chhattisgarh, the city of Raipur came under it.
The Municipal Corporation of Raipur was formed by Chhattisgarh state government. The municipality provides all the basic amenities and services to citizen of Raipur. It has been associated with the development and construction of several residential housing enclaves as well as some commercial projects. Smt. Kiran Mayi Nayak is the honorable mayor and Shri. Taran Prakash Sinha is the Municipality Commissioner. According to a census in 2011, the MCR population was 1,010,087. However, it may differ slightly.
The municipality effectively participates in several programs and activities that encompass city development and growth. Since its evolution, it has been successful in providing a basic infrastructure to the city. Suitable initiatives are taken to make Raipur a pollution-free and green city. New and better sewerage and drainage systems are being offered at different part of the city, especially in the slums and poverty driven areas. Streets have been decorated with energy-saving light poles.
The Municipal Corporation of Raipur has also taken initiative to offer basic education to backward class children, free of cost. Children are supplied with books, school dress, and food. This is one of the noblest initiatives taken by the municipality. Roads are also being developed in a better way. Construction work for new highway roads are in full process. Several multiplex and shopping complexes have opened in the last three years. MCR is trying harder to transform Raipur into a major metropolitan city of India. JNNURM is also providing several help and services. Of late, newer projects on prevention of diseases and epidemics were launched by MCR in collaboration with JNNURM. The budget was sanctioned by State government.
MCR also keep a note on the city population growth. It provides birth certificates of new born to the parents. Similarly, it provides death certificate to the family member of a deceased. The municipal corporation of Raipur is also responsible for levying certain taxes on house property and business projects. Presently, development of rural areas at exterior city location is going in full flow from MCR.
