Thane, a city in the Indian state of Maharashtra, is situated on an island known as Salsette towards the northeast of Mumbai, the capital of the state. The city spans an area of 147 square kilometer and the population in the city is estimated to be 1.26 million. Surrounded by the hill of Yeoor and Parsik from all sides, Thane is situated at the head of the Thane Creek, which divides the city into two parts. Thane creek is an estuary formed by the Ulhas river and the Arabian Sea. There are rail and road bridges to connect the two parts of the city. As many as 30 lakes are found in the city of Thane. The Masunda Talao or Talao Pali is the most beautiful lake and a major tourist attraction in Thane. The Upavan Lake is another beautiful lake located between the Yeoor hills and the Neelkanth Heights. Thane is a major satellite city of Mumbai offering a good alternative to those who could not afford to live in the metropolitan city of Mumbai. Increased real estate activities, which have seen the growth of upmarket residential complexes, such as Neelkanth Heights, Hiranandani Meadows, Hiranandani Estate and Vasant Vihar have attracted a large influx of people from Mumbai in recent times. Alongside, the rising number of shopping malls, restaurants and commercial complexes are opening avenues for increased financial activities in the city .
