Visakhapatnam, also known as Vizag, is a coastal city in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. Situated on the eastern shore of India and surrounded by the hills of the Eastern Ghats, the city is referred to as “The Jewel of the East Coast”. Known by the name of Waltair during the time of British rule, the city is also called as “The City of Destiny”. Visakhapatnam is the second largest city of Andhra Pradesh with an area expanding as much as 550 sq. km. Towards the east, it faces the Bay of Bengal. The Eastern Naval Command of the Indian Navy is based in the city, which is the administrative headquarters of the district of Visakhapatnam. Visakhapatnam serves as the only natural harbor on the eastern part of India, which has made it one of the largest ports of the country. Known as a major industrial city of India, Visakhapatnam houses a number of state owned heavy industries. One of the most advanced steel plants of the country lies here. Some of the prominent industries include the names of HPCL, Bharat Heavy Plates and Vessels (B.H.P.V), Caltex Oil Refinery, Hindustan Zinc Ltd, Coromandel Fertilizers, Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, Simhadri Thermal Power Plant, Rain Calcining Ltd., etc. Visakhapatnam is also a favorite spot for national and international tourists, who come here to have a picturesque view of its unspoilt beaches, Araku Valley and Borra Caves. The city also features a number of ancient temples and Buddhist sites, chief among them are Simhachalam temple, Thotlakonda and Bavikonda. Ramakrishna Beach is the first submarine museum of South Asia that has been established here.
